Holistic Therapy

It is a testament to our struggle to make sense of the world that we have found so many different ways of trying to understand and explain what goes on in the body. In Western anatomical terms we think in terms of body systems and organs. Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on a picture of energy flows within the meridian system. Hindu Ayurvedic writings describe the chakras with their differing qualities and the Theosophists, through the writings of Charles Leadbetter & Annie Besant, describe the physical body as only the most dense and visible of several layers, called the subtle or energy bodies.

I don’t believe that any of these descriptions are more true than the others – they just work on different levels. For instance, many people consult me because they have symptoms of candida: abdominal bloating and pain, continual fatigue and brain fog, allergic reactions, fungal infections etc. This can all be explained in Western physiological terms and often results from high stress levels, use of anti-biotics or other hormone medications. However testing may well reveal that the Kidney meridian is over-energised and several others, possibly Liver and Spleen, are under-energised. During the course of treatment we may well correct the Solar Plexus and Throat chakras, and speed up the work processing from the Etheric into the Physical body, in addition to addressing the problem directly through suitable supplements and diet.

Applied Kinesiology uses a very simple picture to look for root causes: the Triad of Health. The 3 sides of the Triad are structural, chemical and mental and all 3 must be in balance for optimal health. When a person has ill health, at least one of these factors is involved, but often 2 or all 3 must be analysed and treated. For instance, if you have a long-term intestinal irritation it will eventually give rise to low back pain, as there is a dual nerve supply to the low back and the intestines. This in turn causes emotional stress or depression which further exacerbates these symptoms, then malabsorption of nutrients will further deplete the body and make healing even less likely. Looking at all 3 sides of the Triad and addressing appropriate treatments to each aspect will help to restore balance and bring the person back to health. The joy of Kinesiology is that we have such a simple tool at our disposal: muscle-testing is a non-invasive but accurate way of pinpointing where to go and what to do. It allows the body to set the priorities in order to obtain a smooth healing process.

I am always amazed at just how resilient the human body is: I often see people who exist in less than 100% health, on a poor diet with very little physical exercise and unbearable stress loads, yet they are still alive and functioning! It truly is a testament to the body’s ability to ‘make do and mend’ that we keep going at all. However, this self-repair ability inevitably gets weaker as we get older and sooner or later the inevitable happens and we get seriously ill. Illness of course is the body’s way of asking for help; unfortunately most modern prescription drugs only attempt to moderate the symptoms and do nothing to address the root causes of the illness.

The sooner we start to take our health into our own hands, find out what is causing our symptoms and see what we can do to put things right, the more likely we are to fulfil our potential and enjoy a ripe old age.
